Beetroot Powder vs. The Crunchy Ginger
A few months ago, I bought this bag of organic beetroot powder with big dreams of effortless, naturally dyed, diy lip balms in deep red. How hard could it be? This stuff stains everything pink from your fingers to your pee! Well… it turns out that it is a little more complicated than that.
The trouble is that beetroot powder is water soluble, not oil soluble. That means that if you just mix some of this vibrant red powder in your lip balm, it turns into a gritty nasty mess! But I had seen other beetroot lip balm recipes floating around the interwebs and so I knew somehow this could be done. And I was determined to make it work!
After much trial and error, the answer turned out to be pretty simple (once I figured it out of course ha!) In order to use beetroot powder in an all-oil lip balm, you have to first infuse the oil with the beet powder! To save you a few months and a bunch of wasted oil, let me walk you through it.
What's in Glossy Pink Beetroot Lip Balm?
Ingredients:
- 15 g (about 1 T) coconut oil
- 3g (about 1 tsp) olive oil (or other shiny carrier oil like castor oil)
- 8g (about 2 tsp) beetroot powder
- 1g (about 1/2 tsp) cocoa butter
- 2 g (about 1/2 tsp) Beeswax
- a few drops Vitamin E oil (optional)
Equipment:
- 1 lip balm container (about 10mL)
- A double boiler OR a small heat proof bowl and saucepan
- spatula or spoon
- a cheesecloth or coffee filter
- A kitchen scale (optional, but useful)
Ready? Let’s DIY Some Glossy Beetroot Lip Balm!
First, place coconut oil and olive oil (or other shiny carrier oil such as castor oil) in a double boiler or a heatproof bowl on top of a saucepan of simmering water. Stir gently until all are completely melted.
Next, add beetroot powder and stir to incorporate, breaking up any small clumps. Allow oils and beetroot to infuse for about 30 min- 1 hour, keeping the water at a low simmer and stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and wipe any water from the bottom of the bowl. Carefully pour the mixture into a coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth on top of a small bowl. Let this cool for just a moment until it is cool enough to handle. Carefully squeeze the oil out of the filter into the bowl. You should end up with approximately 10g of pink oil.
Wipe your heatproof bowl with a rag or paper towel to remove any remaining sediment. Now, add the cocoa butter and beeswax to your double boiler and allow these to melt together. Pour the pink oil into the butter and wax mixture and stir to incorporate.
Remove the bowl from the pot of simmer water and again wipe any water from the bottom of the bowl. Add a few drops of vitamin E oil (if using) and stir.
Finally, pour the mixture into a clean lip balm container and allow to set up until completely cool!
A Few Notes about Pink Infused Beetroot Oil
Here are a few things I learned that might be helpful as you experiment with making your own pink beetroot oil.
- You will lose about half of your oil in the infusion process. It just gets sucked into the powder and doesn’t strain out. So you will need to infuse about twice the amount of oil as you need for your recipe.
- A good rule of thumb is to add about half the amount of beetroot powder as oil. For example, for this beetroot lip balm, I used 3 tsp of coconut oil and 1 tsp of olive oil. Therefore, I added 2 tsp beet powder.
- Coconut oil is a great choice for infusing since it is white and provides a kind of blank canvas for the beetroot powder to dye. It’s also excellent in many diy beauty recipes!
- I tried infusing cocoa butter as well as the oils and while it does work, I lost a lot of the butter into the depths of the beetroot powder. So for this recipe, I chose to add it into the recipe later.
- This beetroot lip balm tastes amazing! The cocoa butter, beetroot, and coconut flavors melt together to taste something like chocolate brownies! So yummy.
- Beetroot oil is pink but it does not leave much color on the lips. For a bright pink lip, beetroot oil is not your best choice. However, if you want a pink-colored product with just a hint of color this is perfect. I think it gives a beautiful pinkish shimmer!
- This also makes it perfect for a kid’s makeup product. It’s fun and fancy and safe for everyone! Also, if you have ever purchased play makeup for a child, you know it is either super expensive or full of nasty ingredients. I first made this glossy beetroot lip balm for a little girl’s birthday gift. (But I have been loving it for myself!)

What if I wanted to make the colour more bright and more visible red? What kind of ingredients should I use? I wanted to use more natural kind rather than using mica as colour.
I have read that alkanet root powder can produce a more vibrant pink shade, although it still won’t be opaque. I have not had a chance to play around with it myself, but I think it would be steeped and infused in the oil similar to this recipe. Here is a recipe on another site I like with a bit more info, although you can certainly find other recipes if you google around a bit. https://www.humblebeeandme.com/ruby-lip-tint/.
